| Only a year after hitting the
charts, Madonna landed her first #1 with "Like
A Virgin," which would become one
of the biggest singles of her career. It amassed
a remarkable six weeks at number one, second only
to "Take A Bow" as her
longest-running chart-topper. The song is one
of Madonna's most recognizable, and she has
performed the track in various incarnations at
all of her world tours. Indeed, her performance
in the 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour, where she
simulated masturbation on a bed, was promoted to
MTV and actually received several VMA nominations
(although it did not win any awards).
Certainly if the desperation of "Burning
Up" or the belly-button-baring in
"Lucky Star" didn't
raise the ire of so-called moralists, then
"Like A Virgin" definitely established
Madonna as a woman bent on breaking the rules.
Many consider Madonna's true "arrival"
to be her performance of the song at the 1984 MTV
VMA's, where she writhed around on the stage in a
wedding dress. She also dons a wedding dress in
the video for "Like A Virgin," which
was shot on location in Venice. The video
features a real lion, and rather embarassingly, a
man wearing a lion mask on his head.
