After the clear musical growth
found on much of "True Blue,"
"Who's That Girl"
marked a bit of a creative roadblock. The song is
a nice enough pop tune, but didn't do much to
push Madonna forward. Perhaps Madonna felt the
same way, because "Who's That Girl" is
her only #1 song (at the time) to not be included
on "The Immaculate Collection." The
song and video pick up on some of the same themes
found in "La Isla Bonita"
-- the chorus is partially in Spanish, while once
again Madonna is dressed as a boy in the video.
The video is probably the most bizarre clip in
Madonna's career, a seemingly random combination
of film clips, Madonna's boyish character, a
cartoon Madonna, and a box of crystals.
