"Rescue Me"
is easily one of Madonna's most under-rated and
overlooked singles. The powerhouse vocals,
spoken-word verses, and the thundering pace of
the song made for one of Madonna's strongest
tracks. However, released during maximum Madonna
media saturation, and with no video to increase
exposure for the song, "Rescue Me" was
overshadowed by the plethora of Madonna movies,
albums, and other hit singles released at the
time. That said, the song did quite well on
airplay, although it surprisingly missed the top
of the Club Play chart, her only dance single to
do so between 1987 and 1995.
TRIVIA: The parallels between
"Rescue Me" and "Don't Cry
For Me Argentina" are quite
remarkable -- both songs peaked at #5 on airplay
and had no proper video, both songs peaked at #1
on the maxi-single sales chart and at #11 on the
Hot 100 Sales chart, and their Hot 100 peaks are
only one position apart -- "Rescue Me"
hit #9 and "Don't Cry For Me Argentina"
hit #8. Indeed, their debut positions on the Hot
100 are virtually identical as well --
"Rescue Me" debuted at #15 while DCFMA
landed at #17 in its first week.
