You'd think that
after 17 years as a major musical force,
Madonna might be running out of ideas. If
anything, Music proves just the opposite.
Produced by Mirwais, a French musician
who has often been compared to Daft Punk,
Music slams home some big beats, a
one-note stomping bassline, and some of
the catchiest lyrics Madonna has
delivered since the early 80's. Add to
this a slew of strong remixes, and you've
got Madonna's strongest single in years.
It comes as no surprise then that
"Music" topped the Hot 100 for
four weeks, went platinum, and dominated
the dance charts as Madonna's most
successful dance hit ever. This marks
Madonna's twelfth #1 single, her first
since "Take A Bow" in 1995, and
is overall Madonna's biggest single since
"Justify My Love."
The video featured Madonna turning the
tables on the excesses of male-dominated
hip-hop. Donning a cowboy hat, fur coat,
and gold necklaces, Madonna rode in high
style in a gaudy gold limousine. Madonna
was roughly five months pregnant when the
video for "Music" was filmed,
which is why she is sitting down and/or
wearing a coat for most of the video. The
limo driver in the video is British
comedian Ali G. During the animated
sequence in the video, Madonna destroys
various signs baring the names of some of
her past hits. (Also in the animated
sequence, if you pay close attention when
Ali G is spinning the turntable, you'll
notice that there is a woman doing
something rather "naughty" to
him right before Madonna shows up!) The
video climaxes with Madonna's trip to a
strip club, as she and pals Debi Mazar
and Niki Harris enjoy lap dances and
pole-dancing.
"Music"
got a lot of press when someone stole an
early demo version of the track and
distributed it online nearly four months
before the album came out. The demo
version cut off the last 45 seconds or so
of the song and featured the chorus
repeated twice at the end instead of only
once. Also, it is worth noting that
"Music" was the last single
ever released in the US to go platinum.
