It's not clear why
exactly Madonna released her second major
greatest hits album (fourth if you
include You Can Dance and Something to
Remember) without any new material, but
in interviews Madonna claimed that she
felt it would be dishonest to call a new
song one of her "greatest hits"
when it had yet to be released
(personally I believe this statement was
tongue in cheek and she just didn't have
any new material she liked). Faced with
the question of how to promote GHV2
without a new song or even a new photo
shoot, Warner Bros. opted to prepare a
"megamix" of several of the
songs on the album. Thunderpuss, who had
previously remixed "Don't Tell
Me," edited together the songs and a
special music video was compiled using
special effects to display clips from
Madonna's past work.
It's not really a
surprise that the Megamix failed to
garner much attention from radio
stations, as megamixes by other artists
like Michael Jackson have been met with
similarly tepid responses. It is quite
remarkable, however, that the Megamix was
able to climb to the top 5 of the Club
Play chart. Alternate megamixes from the
likes of Tracy Young helped fuel its
climb.
Although the
Megamix was never officially released as
a single, it was available in some
countries and stores as a special gift
with the purchase of GHV2
