"Live To Tell"
marks a very important point in Madonna's career.
After the success of her first album and "Like
A Virgin," Madonna approached a
cross-roads: continue down the teeny-bopper path,
or take a risk and attempt to establish a career
as a more mature pop artist. Fortunately, she
chose the latter, and "Live To Tell"
stands as the first "mature" single of
her career. The song weaves together a sorrowful
tale, Madonna's soulful vocals, and some very
unusual song structure -- and it became a big
hit. Taken from the soundtrack to "At
Close Range," starring her first
husband, Sean Penn, the video was comprised
mainly of clips from the film, but also included
Madonna wearing a rather conservative dress and
hairstyle, singing alone surrounded by blackness.
The song was also included on the "True
Blue" album later that year.
TRIVIA: Here's a piece of
Madonna folklore for you: Madonna sang "Live
To Tell" in only one take, and many say that
if you listen closely you can hear her rustling
the lyric sheets in her hands. I can't hear
anything, but maybe that's just me. :)
