"Only when I'm dancing can
I feel this free" became yet another
personal anthem for legions of Madonna fans with
the release of "Into the Groove."
One of Madonna's biggest hits of the '80s, it
unfortunately lacked a proper single release and
thus failed to chart in the U.S. It is almost
certain that had a single been released in the
United States, the song would have gone to #1. As
it stands, it is tied with "Vogue"
as Madonna's longest running #1 single in the UK. The
song was the B-side to "Angel"
in the United States, and was taken from the film
"Desperately Seeking Susan,"
one of Madonna's few acting roles to win
accolades. The video was made entirely from clips
from the movie. The song was eventually added to
later editions of "Like A Virgin,"
and was later available on both "You
Can Dance" and "The
Immaculate Collection." At the time
of its release, Billboard did not allow
airplay-only singles to even chart on the airplay
chart -- however, a comparable listing can be
found using the R&R chart, where "Into
the Groove" hit #1 (special thanks to Jim
Radenhausen).
