LATEST NEWS: Impressive Instant
12 DECEMBER 2001

Sorry for the lack of updates since mid-November, but after spending two weeks on top of the Club Play chart, "Impressive Instant" sacrificed its crown and has since begun a slow descent sliding 1-3-6-10. That gives the song six weeks in the top ten, matching "What It Feels Like For A Girl" but behind the 7 and 8 week runs for "Music" and "Don't Tell Me" respectively. "Impressive Instant" will spend at least two more weeks on the chart (the week after next is a "frozen" chart week for the Club Play chart, meaning "Impressive Instant" will stay at whatever position it's at next week for an additional week) and will likely spend another week in the top 50 after that giving it a total chart run of 11 weeks, on par with Madonna's faster-burning club hits. "Impressive Instant" is closely following the chart run of "Beautiful Stranger":

II: 25-12-4-1-1-3-6-10-?
BS: 28-10-3-1-1-3-7-11-20-37-45

If "Impressive Instant" remains in the top 20 next week (this spending two more weeks in the top 20 as explained above), it will have a nine-week run in the top 20, surpassing WIFL while matching DTM and falling one short of "Music." I probably won't update this page again until after II has completed its run.

A promising sidenote to this week's charts -- "Impressive Instant" is actually still bulleted at #1 on club play this week. Why is that important? Well, the only other recent Madonna single to spend more than one bulleted week at #1 was "Music," and that song went on to spend five weeks at the top of the chart. Even 4-week #1 "Ray of Light" was bulleted only during its first week on top of the charts. What this means is that "Impressive Instant" will most likely spend a third week at #1 on the club play chart, and possibly even a fourth week.

14 NOVEMBER 2001

It's not official until tomorrow, but "Impressive Instant" spends a second week at #1 on the Club Play chart, outlasting both DTM and WIFL's solitary week at pole position. It is her 13th single to spend multiple weeks at #1 on the Club Play chart. If it spends three weeks at #1 it will match "Express Yourself" as Madonna's fifth most successful Club Play #1. Her biggest #1's are "Holiday/Lucky Star" and "Music" with 5 weeks at #1 each, while both "Like A Virgin" and "Ray of Light" spent four weeks at the top. "Music" is further bolstered as Madonna's most successful club play album, as its four #1 singles have spent a total of nine weeks at #1, outpacing runner-up "Ray of Light," which had three singles spend a total of eight weeks at #1.

Note that the Billboard chart year ends with this week's charts, so "Impressive Instant" will only log five weeks on the 2001 Billboard charts. Madonna has spent a total of 30 weeks on the Club Play charts this year with three #1 hits which have spent four weeks at #1 combined. Her closest competition for Club Play artist of the year is Janet Jackson, who will likely have the #1 club hit of the year with "All For You" and could very well edge out Madonna for top club play artist. "Don't Tell Me" stands a good chance of being one of the top ten club play singles of the year.

8 NOVEMBER 2001

What we already knew is now official. "Impressive Instant" is a #1 Club Play hit. We'll soon see how long it can hold on to the top spot. It may be more difficult than expected, since entries 2-7 are all bulleted as well.

2 NOVEMBER 2001

Again, this is not confirmed yet, but every week so far I have received accurate information about "Impressive Instant"'s position on next week's charts, and it appears it will officially be Madonna's 27th #1 Club Play hit on the November 17, 2001 chart! Its stratospheric climb to #1 in just 4 weeks matches the runs of "Beautiful Stranger" and "Music." It is also Madonna's fourth #1 Club Play hit from the "Music" album, making this easily the most successful club album of Madonna's career (remember, international versions carry "American Pie," which was also a #1 US club hit). The chart climbs of her most recent club singles:

Beautiful Stranger: 28-10-3-1-1 (11 weeks on the chart)
American Pie: 37-21-10-6-2-1 (11 weeks)
Music: 43-11-3-1-1-1-1-1 (13 weeks)
Don't Tell Me: 38-21-9-5-5-3-1 (14 weeks)
What It Feels Like For A Girl: 38-25-9-2-2-1 (11 weeks)
Impressive Instant 25-12-4-1-?

My records only go back to "Secret," so I can't confirm if any other Madonna hits have risen to the top of the charts in four weeks (or faster). My guess is that there probably has been very few (if any) instances of a song by any artist hitting the top of the club play chart faster than 4 weeks. As a reminder, Madonna is the record-holder for most #1 Club Play hits by any artist, as well as the female artist with the most #1's on any given chart (I believe country band Alabama holds the record for most #1's on any chart with over 40 #1 country singles).

I think it's fair to say that "Impressive Instant" will spend multiple weeks at #1 on the Club Play chart -- my initial guess is three weeks.

Also, special thanks to Ben Ogden for informing me that four other artists have had four #1 club play singles from one album. They are:

Janet Jackson "Rhythm Nation"
C + C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat"
Lisa Stansfield "Lisa Stansfield"
Whitney Houston "My Love Is Your Love"

1 NOVEMBER 2001

I can now confirm that "Impressive Instant" soars 12-4 on the Club Play chart. An interesting side note -- Deep Dish has been remixing the track and promos featuring their mixes should be out shortly, which means that "Impressive Instant" could sustain itself for a relatively long club chart life. Staggered releases of remixes is also what helped "Music" spend five weeks at #1.

30 OCTOBER 2001

I am unable to confirm this yet, but I've heard that "Impressive Instant" LEAPS up the club play chart to #4 this week! "Impressive Instant" is thus far following the trajectories of Madonna's recent multi-week #1 hits on the dance chart by reaching the top 5 in its third week. Madonna's fastest risers, "Beautiful Stranger" and "Music," were at #3 in their third week before ascending to the top spot the following week for 2 and 5 weeks respectively. "Frozen," "Nothing Really Matters," and "Ray of Light" matched "Impressive Instant" by reaching #4 in their third week, and then each climbed 4-2-1 to spend 2, 2, and 4 weeks at #1 respectively. "Impressive Instant" is well ahead of the pace of DTM and WIFL, which were both at #9 in their third week and each only spent a single week on top of the club play chart -- they did not reach #1 until their 7th and 6th weeks respectively. "Impressive Instant" is on track to be one of Madonna's biggest club smashes and easily her biggest non-single club hit. Madonna is also in the running to be the #1 club play artist of the year.

19 OCTOBER 2001

Since Billboard compiles the Club Play chart 2 weeks in advance, sometimes chart positions slip out ahead of time. Today we learn that on next week's chart, "Impressive Instant" will climb from #25 to #12. At this point I think it's fair to say that "Impressive Instant" will most likely hit #1. Some have asked if other artists have had four or more #1 club hits from a single album. I am told that Whitney Houston had four club #1's from last album ("Heartbreak Hotel," "It's Not Right But It's Okay," "My Love Is Your Love," "I Learned From The Best"), and apparently Janet Jackson has accomplished this feat as well (I would guess with "Rhythm Nation"). I don't know if any artist has had more than four.

18 OCTOBER 2001

After landing on the Club Play Breakout chart last week at #1 (a sort of "bubbling under" for club hits), "Impressive Instant" debuts on the Club Play chart at a powerful #25. This marks one of Madonna's highest debuting club hits, behind only club smashes like "Secret" and "Nothing Really Matters." As far as I know, clubs are playing the Peter Rauhofer mixes of the song, although a handful of DJ's may even be spinning the album version. I would predict a jump to around #14 next week. Hopefully this single will go to #1 on the club play chart, making it her seventh successive #1 club hit (ninth if you don't count the un-promoted "Sky Fits Heaven" in 1998) and 27th #1 club hit of her career. It would also make "Music" Madonna's only album to feature four #1 club hits. Note that there are NO plans for any sort of commerical release of "Impressive Instant" or any of its remixes.
