Although "Holiday"
was Madonna's third single, it was her first song
to become a bona fide hit, making the top ten in
several countries and hitting #16 in the U.S. The
song is quite simple, a light ode to freedom and
kicking back to enjoy life. Despite its so-so
peak in the U.S., it stands as one of her most
often played hits to this day. A video was shot
for the song for its 1983 release, but it was
scrapped and probably only a small handful of
people have seen it. "Holiday" has
had many resurrections over the years. It
initially peaked at #6 in the UK, then was able
to hit #2 upon a 1985 re-release. In 1991 the
song was once again promoted along with Madonna's
film "Truth or Dare,"
and the third release of the song in the
UK saw it hit #5 in 1991. This is also the first
time any video was attached to the song, as
stations like MTV broadcast a clip from the film
showing Madonna giving a live performance of the
track.
There's even more to the "Holiday"
story. In 1998, an unidentified DJ mixed together
"Holiday" and the mega club hit (and
incredible song) "Music Sounds
Better With You" by Stardust
(which is an offshoot of the group Daft
Punk). The song became quite a smash
among fans, and is widely considered one of the
best remixes of her career. Unfortunately, the
track was never officially released. MP3's abound
on the web, however.
Note that in the clubs, "Holiday"
charted as "Holiday/Lucky Star," and is
tied with "Music" for
spending the most weeks at #1 out of all her
singles.
