Did Madonna go too far with
"Erotica"? Many have
asked that question since Madonna's most
controversial album came out in 1992, and with
good reason. The video for "Erotica"
was arguably the closest thing to pornography
ever aired on MTV (although the video wasn't
banned, it was only played past midnight),
featuring sado-masochism, hinting at lesbian sex,
and depicting some bizarre interaction with a
hand puppet. Madonna had already pushed the
sexual boundaries with 1989's provocative "Like
A Prayer" video and with the banned
"Justify My Love"
video, so perhaps "Erotica" was one
time too many. Although initially the song and
album did well, they both faded quickly.
"Erotica" became the first lead-off
single from a Madonna album to miss the #1 spot
since 1983, and the "Erotica" album was
also her first to yield no #1 singles since her
debut.
TRIVIA: "Erotica"
managed to make one incredible record that has
yet to be challenged to this day -- it holds the
highest debut on Hot 100 Airplay in history,
landing on the chart at #2 in its first week,
which would also be its peak. Also, a re-edit of
the song with slightly different lyrics, entitled
"Erotic," appeared as
a special CD bonus with copies of the "Sex"
book.
