After the intensity of "Like
A Prayer" and "Express
Yourself," "Cherish"
marked a return to a more bouyant, joyous
Madonna. The song was a simple yet skillfully
done pop confection, and unfortunately like the
single before it, had to settle for the runner-up
spot on the charts. Madonna recruited Herb
Ritts to direct the video, as he had
previously photographed her, most notably for the
"True Blue" cover
shoot (which many say is Madonna's best album
cover). However, Ritts had never directed a video
before. After some coaxing, she convinced him to
do the shoot, and it became one of Madonna's most
memorable clips. Dancing by the ocean with a
little mer-boy and watching the mer-man swimming
out at sea, Madonna looked care-free and happy.
