"Burning
Up/Physical Attraction" was the
second single release of Madonna's career. After
"Everybody" managed to
just dent the Bubbling Under chart on the Hot
100, "Burning Up" failed to chart at
all, except on Club Play where it matched
"Everybody"'s peak of #3. "Burning
Up" was also Madonna's first
"proper" video after the
ultra-low-budget "Everybody." It
featured chained doors, staring eyes, and a
bleach-blonde chick writhing around on asphalt at
night. The clip is a montage of ideas that would
look terribly cheesy today, but given the
standard for music videos in 1983, it was
actually rather good. The song itself is a
personal favorite -- I think this is one of
Madonna's best songs and certainly the best song
from her first two albums. The lyrics really
prophesized Madonna's career trajectory:
"Unlike the others I'll do anything, I'm not
the same, I have no shame." Gotta love it.
