First things first -- does
Madonna not look like a big-time Pat
Benatar wannabe on that single cover?
Kinda freaky... Anyway, back to my normal
straightforward, serious-person style. :) "Borderline"
took things a step further than "Holiday"
by becoming the first top ten hit of Madonna's
career. Listening to this song, it might be hard
to believe the level of musical sophistication
Madonna would develop in the decades to come, but
all in all "Borderline" is a nice
little pop song, more memorable for its career
significance than its aural aesthetics. The video
featured Madonna and her beau, but certainly the
most interesting part was when Madonna
spray-painted an "X" over the crotch of
a male statue -- one of the earliest signs of the
rebel behind the pop veneer.
In the UK, "Borderline" was not
initially a hit, hitting a dismal #56.
Fortunately, a 1986 re-release saw it soar to #2.
In the US, "Borderline" is tied with
"Take A Bow" as
Madonna's longest-running hit on the Hot 100,
amassing a remarkable 30 weeks on the chart.
